I was lead to believe that this book would be helpful, for the beginner, to learn to read music. It is not. It is for students who already have a basic understanding of reading music and is simply a “note reading” book. Which I have yet to discover the usefullness of. A better book for the beginner”, someone who has no knowledge of how to read music and needs to learn the basic principles involved in reading music, is “Learn to read music” by Howard Shanet.

Possibly this book could be useful in teaching a very young student to read music, but since I have all ages of students, including adults, I find the material much too basic to be useful.

My daugther’s violin teacher requires this book. It suppliments the Suzuki training and helps the children learn to read notes.
